“Just go for it!” – Rufus RAW intern shares advice for future applicants

Rufus Leonard re-launched its RAW paid internship in July, inviting aspiring technology and design specialists to learn from our team of passionate experts. Here’s what intern Rebecca had to say about her time with us.

What is RAW?

Rufus’ RAW initiative is a paid internship which helps people from any background get a fair look into an industry that can often be a closed door. We know it’s competitive out there, so we’re offering opportunities that aren’t about who you know or what you know, but who you want to become. We’re also a London Living Wage employer – which means we pay the real living wage to all directly-paid Rufus employees. That includes our RAW interns.

The internship runs across all disciplines to give a taste of what a career in the industry is like. Our interns won’t be making coffees and scrolling the internet; we’ll give them a structured brief and plenty of mentorship and support from our team, so they leave us with lots of new knowledge and a great piece for their portfolio.

Alongside our range of RAW partners, we also get involved in portfolio reviews, 1-to-1 mentoring, student lectures, workshops and more, to help those starting out get a good head start. Because that’s what RAW is all about – giving anyone who wants to crack the creative industry the tools they need to succeed.

Here, Rufus RAW design intern Rebecca Park explains how she came to find the internship, what she’s taking away from it, and what advice she has for peers who may be hovering over the “apply” button.

How did you hear about RAW?

“I had a one-day workshop with Rufus Leonard and in that day I learned so many things. I thought the RAW internship would be a great opportunity to learn more about what it means to be a designer in the real world.”

What will you take away from the internship?

“The most valuable thing I’ve learned is the importance of communication. Graduate students who don’t have internship experience find it hard to imagine how different university projects and the design industry are.”

Why should people considering applying for RAW just go for it?

“In the raw internship there are a lot of opportunities to gain mentorship and shadow meetings with clients. You’ll get a chance to see how the real industry works, and there is always someone happy to help you. The people at Rufus are great at cheering you up – so you get a boost of confidence all the time!

“If you’re thinking about applying for the RAW internship but aren’t 100% sure, I say: why not? Just go for it; there are no laws. You’ll get the chance to learn a lot more than you expected. I highly recommend trying this internship and this experience.”

We’re always on the lookout for hungry, proactive, and passionate copywriters, brand designers, UX designers and strategy practitioners to join our RAW internship.
